Spain HIT by Violent Storm - 17,000 Without Power (Latest Updates)
A powerful storm swept across Catalonia and Mallorca in Spain on Wednesday, bringing torrential rain, hail and strong winds across parts of the western Mediterranean. Mallorca recorded some of the heaviest impacts, while emergency services across the Balearic Islands responded to more than 170 incidents.------
In Catalonia, authorities restricted non-essential movement across five districts and closed schools as heavy rain affected areas west and south of Barcelona. In Mallorca, intense rainfall caused a stream to burst its banks, roads to be cut, trees to fall and widespread power outages.-----
The storm developed as colder air moved in from mainland Spain and interacted with hot, moisture-rich air over the Mediterranean following a recent heatwave. Forecasters warned that intense rainfall could develop in short bursts.-------
In this video, we examine the storm's path from Catalonia to Mallorca, the conditions that fueled the severe weather, the damage and emergency response, and the risk of further thunderstorms and rough seas.--------
Confirmed casualty and missing-person figures are pinned in the comments and updated as official numbers change.
