CNS - Costa News Spain KI-Inhalt · 16 Std. · MURCIA FLOODING: TWO WATER RESCUES, VEHICLES TRAPPED AND ROADS BLOCKED AS HEAVY STORMS CONTINUE OVERNIGHT 馃搷 MURCIA / CARTAGENA / MAZARR脫N / 脕GUILAS — SATURDAY 17 OCTOBER 2026 Emergency services across the Region of Murcia have been responding to flooding, stranded vehicles and dangerous road conditions as intense rainfall and thunderstorms sweep across southeastern Spain. By 7.50pm on Saturday, Murcia's 112 emergency coordination centre had recorded 57 weather-related incidents, including two freshwater rescue operations, with authorities warning that further heavy rainfall could continue overnight and into Sunday. The severe weather has affected several communities, particularly Cartagena, 脕guilas, Mazarr贸n and Alhama de Murcia. VEHICLES CAUGHT IN FLOODWATER Emergency reports have revealed several concerning incidents involving motorists caught by rising water. In Alhama de Murcia, a vehicle became trapped by floodwater on Avenida Europa, near the La Hita business premises. In Los Nietos, Cartagena, another vehicle was affected by accumulated water near a rambla. Cartagena's Civil Protection service confirmed that officers used a four-wheel-drive vehicle to tow a stranded car to safety. A further incident was reported on the RM-404 at kilometre 10, where an overflowing rambla affected the road while a vehicle carrying two occupants was present. In 脕guilas, floodwater crossing the RM-D18 near the Rambla de El Coc贸n made the road impassable. The exact circumstances and outcomes of all these incidents have not yet been fully detailed. RESCUE OPERATIONS NEAR MURCIA Emergency services also received a request to rescue people caught out by a storm near the Relojero mountain area outside Murcia city. Separately, firefighters attended a mountain rescue near Santo 脕ngel, where a 26-year-old man suffered an ankle injury and required hospital treatment. The regional emergency centre has confirmed two freshwater rescue operations in its overall storm response, although full details of those two incidents have not yet been released. CARTAGENA AMONG WORST AFFECTED AREAS Cartagena accounted for the largest number of emergency calls recorded by the regional 112 service. The breakdown of the 55 calls received by 7.50pm included: - Cartagena — 28 calls - Murcia city — 10 calls - Alhama de Murcia — 7 calls - Yecla — 3 calls - La Uni贸n — 2 calls Across the region, emergency responders dealt with 21 incidents involving obstacles on public roads and five requiring water-pumping operations. Heavy rainfall also caused flooding and disruption across parts of Cartagena, with more than 30 litres per square metre falling within minutes in some areas, according to the city council. Road restrictions were introduced around Ciudad Jard铆n and the Rotonda del 600, while bus route 25 was suspended on Saturday and routes 3 and 9 were diverted. EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION PREPARED Cartagena Council has placed its emergency response arrangements on standby in vulnerable areas. Three schools in Los Nietos, La Manga and Isla Plana have been prepared to accommodate residents if evacuations become necessary. Authorities have also made preparations to use the Cabezo Beaza sports pavilion if additional emergency accommodation is required. These are precautionary measures. No general evacuation has been confirmed. ORANGE WEATHER WARNINGS CONTINUE INTO SUNDAY Spain's national weather agency, AEMET, has maintained orange rainfall warnings across parts of southern Murcia. The Campo de Cartagena and Mazarr贸n areas remain of particular concern, with warnings extending into Sunday and the early hours of Monday. Rainfall could reach 30 litres per square metre in one hour, with substantially higher accumulations possible over longer periods in some locations. The Guadalent铆n Valley, Lorca and 脕guilas have also been subject to orange warnings, while thunderstorms and possible hail have affected other parts of the region. Authorities are paying particular attention to flood-prone ramblas and low-lying roads, where water levels can rise rapidly. RESIDENTS URGED NOT TO TAKE RISKS Emergency services are reminding residents and motorists that even shallow-looking floodwater can be extremely dangerous. Drivers should avoid flooded roads, underpasses, river crossings and ramblas, particularly during darkness when water depth is difficult to judge. Residents in vulnerable areas are encouraged to monitor official emergency announcements throughout the night. Anyone facing immediate danger should call 112. COSTA SPAIN NEWS WILL CONTINUE MONITORING THE SITUATION With further rainfall forecast and orange warnings remaining in place, the situation across Murcia and the Costa C谩lida could change overnight. Costa Spain News will continue following emergency-service reports, road closures, rescue operations and any further weather-warning changes, bringing readers updates as new information is confirmed. Stay safe, avoid unnecessary journeys during heavy rainfall and never attempt to drive through floodwater. #Murcia #Cartagena #Mazarron #Aguilas #CostaCalida #SpainWeather #Flooding #DANA #AEMET #CostaSpainNews
